Hearty congratulations to our PhD student, Md Nazmul Islam, who has recently been awarded a PhD. The title of Nazmul’s thesis is ” Engineering translational approaches for molecular diagnostics of cancer: Multifunctional nanomaterials and electrochemical sensors for clinically relevant RNA biomarker detection”.
Nazmul’s PhD research focused on RNA biosensing technologies. There are a number of challenges associated with these technologies that need to be addressed before they can be transformed into routine clinical applications. The problems include structural instability of RNA, non-specific interference from non-targets as well as homologous RNA, and requirement of ultrasensitivity. In addition, most of the current bioassays involve complex chemistries, consume large volumes of analytes, and rely on cumbersome enzymatic amplification processes and expensive labelling agents. Under the direct supervision of Dr Muhammad J. A. Shiddiky, Nazmul has addressed these major issues to demonstrate the design and development of a new RNA biosensing platform consisting of four novel readout schemes for the simple, rapid, and inexpensive analysis of various components of the transcriptome, i.e., messenger RNA, microRNA, and long noncoding RNA. During his PhD tenure, he has published more than 20 high impact papers which appeared in top-ranked journals of the field such as Small, Lab-on-a-chip, Analytical Chemistry, Nanoscale, Chemical Communications, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Scientific Reports, ChemElectroChem, etc.
