Welcoming Shaon to the Shiddiky Laboratory

We are delighted to welcome Md. Akeruzzaman Shaon to the Shiddiky Laboratory at Charles Sturt University (CSU), where he has commenced his PhD journey under the supervision of Distinguished Professor Muhammad J. A. Shiddiky. Shaon joins our team with a strong passion and a clear mission: to transform maternal health diagnostics and bring cutting-edge molecular technologies directly to the women and families who need them most.

Shaon’s research focuses on developing rapid, cost-effective point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic devices aimed at detecting life-threatening maternal complications such as preeclampsia (PE) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). His work holds particular significance for resource-limited settings, where timely and accessible diagnostics remain critically needed. By bridging the gap between advanced molecular science and real-world clinical care, Shaon’s vision aligns closely with our lab's broader commitment to translational healthcare innovation.

Shaon’s scientific journey began in Bangladesh, where he achieved his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Dhaka (DU), consistently ranking among the top of his class and receiving multiple academic awards. During his MSc studies, he discovered his passion for the genetic basis of disease, with his thesis investigating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked to breast cancer susceptibility in Bangladeshi women. Combining wet-lab techniques such as PCR, RFLP, and PAGE with advanced computational methods—including molecular docking, dynamics simulation, and bioinformatic analysis—Shaon developed a uniquely integrative research style that continues to shape his work today.

Beyond his academic training, Shaon has acquired diverse professional experiences across several research roles. At the Laboratory of Nutrition and Health Research at DU, he contributed both to experimental studies and the mentorship of junior researchers, developing educational resources and training materials that have supported numerous early-career scientists. His technical expertise further expanded during his time as a Scientific Officer at the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), where he engaged in applied research on food safety and sustainable aquaculture, mastering advanced analytical techniques such as gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ion chromatography (IC), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), and protein/fat analysis.

In addition to his laboratory work, Shaon is also a passionate science educator. Through online platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, he shares educational content on bioinformatics, cancer biology, and biostatistics—helping students and researchers worldwide navigate complex topics with clarity and confidence. His dedication to science communication reflects a deep belief that knowledge should be accessible and empowering for all. Now at CSU, Shaon brings this rich blend of experience to address one of global healthcare’s most persistent challenges: maternal morbidity and mortality. His PhD research focuses on developing biosensing platforms that integrate electrochemical and biochemical detection of pregnancy biomarkers, with the goal of delivering rapid, accurate, and affordable diagnostics even in remote healthcare environments. His interdisciplinary expertise in molecular diagnostics, computational biology, analytical chemistry, bioinformatics, and statistical modelling uniquely positions him to contribute meaningfully to this vital field.

We are excited to have Shaon as part of our dynamic research team at the Shiddiky Laboratory. His work promises not only to advance scientific discovery but also to make a real-world impact on the lives of mothers and infants worldwide.

We warmly welcome Shaon to the team and wish him every success in his PhD journey!
